DSU Extension's 2nd Annual Conference
DSU Extension's “Profiting from a Few Acres” Conference Promotes Profit with Minimal Risk for Small-scale AG Producers
Risk has always been a part of agriculture. But farming on Delmarva has changed dramatically over the past decade. Increasingly, farmers are learning that agriculture today is full of new rules, new stakes, and most of all, new risks. Such issues especially affect small-scale farmers, which is why Delaware State University Cooperative Extension will host the Profiting from a Few Acres conference February 12 – 13, 2010, at the Sheraton Hotel, Dover. This risk management conference will provide information to help small-scale landowners realize new ways to turn a profit.During the conference, ag educators and other professionals will share ways to manage financial, crop diversity, production, marketing and legal risks associated with an agribusiness.“This conference represents DSU Extension’s effort to reach small-scale agriculture business owners throughout the Delmarva Peninsula,” says Albert Essel, Associate Dean for Extension at DSU. “Our goal is to host this forum annually as an affordable resource for the small farm community and anyone seeking to start a small agriculture enterprise.”Pam West, a fourth-generation farmer from Hunterdon County, New Jersey, kicks off the event as keynote speaker on Friday. Theodore Feitshans, from North Carolina Cooperative Extension will speak on Protecting Your Assets on Saturday, followed by a financial planning session led by Dr. Barbara O’Neill from Rutgers University. Representatives from private industry, USDA and universities throughout the country will also present. The conference begins at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, February 12. Registration for the two-day conference is $35 and includes lunch both days. Limited scholarships are available. For more information, or if you require assistance due to disabilities, contact DSU Cooperative Extension at (302) 857-6424.

HBCU-UP SMILE Project Workshop
Title: “Peer-Led Team Learning: The Workshop Model”

Guest Presenters: A.E. Dreyfuss, Project manager, The Peer-Led Team Learning Project, The City College of New York, CUNY; and Janet Liou-Mark, Professor, Department of Mathematics, New York City College of Technology, CUNY

This is an all-day event that will take place from 9 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. in Rm 204, Bank of America Bldg. Peer-Led Team Learning actively engages students in the learning process by having them solve carefully structured problems in small groups under the direction of a trained peer leader. Improved performance and retention, development of communication and team skills, higher motivation and course satisfaction, and increased interest in pursuing further study in science and other disciplines are among the benefit of the PLTL approach. (More information available at www.pltl.org.)

Guest presenters A.E. Dreyfuss and Janet Liou-Mark will present this workshop introducing the theoretical and practical elements of the PLTL model. Participants will be prepared to implement PLTL programs and will have an opportunity to develop Workshop materials for their PLTL Workshops. Students who have served as peer leaders will be actively involved in the course and will discuss their experiences with the PLTL model. The neccessary components for successful implementation and institutionalization of PLTL will be discussed. Lunch will be provided.

All sessions of the seminar series are free and open to the public (unless otherwise noted).

Seating for this workshop is limited. To rsvp, or for more information on this event, contact Ms. Margie Vela, SMILE Project Coordinator at mvela@desu.edu.This event is sponsored by the NSF-funded Science and Mathematics Initiative for Learning Enrichment (SMILE) Project at Delaware State University.
